U4 Drills

Here are a list of a few drills that you can use in your practices.

A great way to start practices is to get the kids to stretch. It is a great way to get their attention. Play silly games, have them make sounds they will love it.

U4 is unique in that practice and game day are one and the same. There are so many things that you can do for the first 15 minutes of practice to give the players the ability to touch the ball. Dont really worry about positions or strategy at this age.

A couple of those are:

  • Passing in a circle calling out the name of the player they are kicking to
  • Having the player move the ball by crawling on the ground and pushing the ball with their head
  • Dribbling the ball between a cone square and trying to avoid other players
  • Any other drills that will keep them kicking the ball while they are running.
  • As they progress you can start introducing more advanced drill but keep it simple

U5 Drills

For a U5 soccer team, it's essential to focus on drills that introduce fundamental soccer skills while keeping the activities fun, engaging, and age-appropriate. Here are some soccer drills suitable for U5 players:

1. Dribbling Through Cones:
   - Set up a line of cones spaced apart.
   - Have players dribble the ball through the cones using both feet.
   - Encourage them to keep the ball close to their feet and use different parts of the foot to control the ball.

2. Toe Taps:
   - Have players stand in place with the ball at their feet.
   - Instruct them to tap the top of the ball alternately with each foot as quickly as they can.
   - Emphasize using the toes to make contact with the ball.

3. Follow the Leader:
   - Designate one player as the leader and have them dribble the ball around the field.
   - The other players must follow the leader and mimic their movements while dribbling their own balls.
   - Encourage players to imitate the leader's dribbling techniques and change direction as the leader does.

4. Passing Pairs:
   - Pair up players and have them stand a short distance apart.
   - Players pass the ball back and forth using both feet.
   - Emphasize using the inside of the foot to pass and receive the ball.

5. Obstacle Course:
   - Set up a simple obstacle course with cones, poles, and hurdles.
   - Have players dribble the ball through the course, weaving in and out of obstacles.
   - Make it a race or a timed challenge to add excitement.

6. Scrimmage with Small Goals:
   - Divide the players into two teams and play a small-sided scrimmage.
   - Use small goals or cones as goals to encourage scoring opportunities.
   - Focus on basic concepts like teamwork, passing, and shooting.

7. Animal Soccer:
   - Assign each player an animal (e.g., lion, tiger, monkey) and have them move and act like that animal while dribbling the ball.
   - Encourage creativity and imagination while incorporating soccer skills.

8. Red Light, Green Light:
   - Set up a playing area with a start line and a finish line.
   - Designate one player as the "traffic light."
   - When the traffic light says "green light," players dribble towards the finish line. When they say "red light," players must stop their ball.
   - Anyone caught moving on a red light has to go back to the start line.

9. Soccer Tag:
   - Set up a playing area and designate one player as "it."
   - The player who is "it" must tag other players by touching their shoulder while dribbling their ball.
   - Once tagged, players become "it" as well, and the game continues.

10.Fun Relays:
    - Organize relay races where players dribble the ball to a cone and back.
    - Divide players into teams and make it a friendly competition.

Remember to keep the drills short, energetic, and positive. Focus on building enthusiasm for the game and developing basic soccer skills in a playful environment.

Here are a few other games and drills that you can use

U6 and U7 Drills

For U6 and U7 players, you can build upon the fundamental skills introduced in the U5 age group while adding a bit more complexity and challenge. Here are some soccer drills suitable for U6 players:

1. Dribbling Around Cones:
   - Set up a line of cones in a zigzag pattern.
   - Players dribble the ball around the cones, using both feet.
   - Encourage players to keep the ball close to their feet and use different dribbling techniques, such as inside and outside of the foot.

2. Passing and Receiving:
   - Pair up players and have them pass the ball back and forth using both feet.
   - Encourage proper technique, such as using the inside of the foot to pass and receive the ball.
   - Add movement to make it more dynamic, with players passing while on the move.

3. Shooting Drills:
   - Set up small goals or target areas and have players take shots on goal.
   - Teach proper shooting technique, focusing on striking the ball with the laces of the foot.
   - Incorporate games like "Knockout" where players take turns shooting, and those who miss are eliminated.

4. 1v1 Dribbling:
   - Pair players up and have them dribble towards each other in a 1v1 situation.
   - Encourage players to use changes of direction and feints to beat their opponent.
   - Emphasize protecting the ball while dribbling and staying balanced.

5. Passing Patterns:
   - Set up a grid and have players pass the ball in different patterns (e.g., triangles, squares).
   - Focus on quick, accurate passing and movement off the ball.
   - Increase the difficulty by adding defenders or time constraints.

6. Small-Sided Games:
   - Divide players into small teams and play mini-games (3v3 or 4v4) on a smaller field.
   - Emphasize teamwork, passing, and spacing.
   - Rotate players frequently to give everyone a chance to play different positions.

7. Crossing and Finishing:
   - Set up a crossing and finishing drill where players cross the ball from the wings, and others try to score with headers or volleys.
   - Teach proper crossing technique and positioning in the box.
   - Rotate players through different roles (crosser, shooter) to develop various skills.

8. Fun Challenges:
   - Organize fun challenges like dribbling races, juggling contests, or accuracy challenges (e.g., hitting targets with passes or shots).
   - Make it competitive but ensure that the focus remains on enjoyment and skill development.

9. Defensive Drills:
   - Introduce basic defensive principles such as containing the attacker and jockeying.
   - Practice simple tackling drills where players learn to win the ball cleanly and safely.

10.Scrimmages with Rules:
    - Play small-sided scrimmages with modified rules to encourage specific skills (e.g., requiring a certain number of passes before a shot, limiting touches).

As with U5 drills, keep the activities short, engaging, and age-appropriate. Focus on creating a positive and supportive learning environment where players can develop their skills while having fun.
